Joy in Service

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”

~Rabindranath Tagore

Many years ago, when I lived in NYC, a friend drew up my astrological chart. I am, incidentally, an Aquarius, which is relevant only to those who place weight onto such things…

At any rate, he noted a placement in my chart that spoke to him of a life of service, with healing an operative part of that. At the time, I was 22 years old, had only practiced massage for a couple of years, and felt convinced that there was something degrading about a life “of service”. I recall thinking, distinctly, “This is nonsense, I am no servant. I must have a higher calling than to serve. Something lofty, something grand and important.”

12 years later, as I reflect on the winding path I’ve walked, I am able to see clearly that a life of service is the highest calling I could possibly have hoped for. To be entrusted with the care of my dear clients’ bodies, to be a confidante and a bringer of relief– I am filled with joy every day that I work to be able to do this for people. My heart is very full at the end of each day. In the dynamic of this exchange- my clients serve me as much as I serve them.

And so I ask you on this beautiful day- how are you serving yourself? How are you being served and serving those around you?

There is such a natural grace to giving. And through giving, receiving.
